The “Odyssey” Community Journalism certificate is part of the J Lab program at MCCC. It is aimed at motivated scholars aged 14-17. Students learn the basic skills of media literacy and news production and use their unique knowledge to tell the stories of their communities. Students who complete the program may have their work published online on MCCC’s award-winning student media website
In the 8-week after-school program students learn to detect fake news, identify newsworthy stories, conduct interviews, write in multiple journalistic styles, take good photos for journalism, and use a variety of tools to create news content.
