Only 10 minutes from MCCC’s West Windsor campus on Rt. 33 in Mercerville, is My Quate is a family-owned Mexican restaurant that offers students a high-quality meal before, after, or in between classes.
When customers walk into My Quate, they are greeted by an array of vibrant colors and beautifully painted walls, tables, and chairs. They are also surrounded by an aroma of authentic Mexican cuisine. Visitors might even meet Henry Ordonez, the owner of My Quate, who greets guests with a warm and welcoming smile.
My Quate was opened by Ordonez’s uncle seven years ago. Ordonez says he took over operations when his uncle decided to retire and move back to Mexico recently.
When asked what to try on the menu, Ordonez recommends the birria tacos. The plate comes with three crispy, golden-brown tacos with birria sauce. The outside of the taco has an initial crunch that is followed by the taste of perfectly seasoned beef and melted cheese, combining for an absolutely beautiful bite of food.
Not only is the food fantastic, but it is also very reasonably priced.
Ordonez says, “We try to keep prices as low as we can, but with the economy, it can sometimes be hard.” The food is worth every penny.
Asked about what makes My Quate stand out from other Mexican restaurants in the area, Ordonez says, “Everybody has their own way of making food; we try to keep it traditional and fresh.” He added, “I think how we treat our customers is what makes us unique. The biggest joy for us is seeing people enjoy the food and leave here happy.”
The Meyer family were recent patrons of My Quate. Katherine Meyer says, “We come here pretty often. Obviously, I think the food is really good, but the staff is also very friendly.”
Ordonez also noted that he has seen a recent flow of students from MCCC coming in and grabbing a bite to eat. When asked about potentially giving out discounts for students at the college, Ordonez said, “We do not offer it right now, but if I continue to see students coming in, I will definitely consider it.”
Overall, dining at My Quate does not feel like the average dining experience. The staff and owner are incredibly welcoming, and it truly does seem like their main goal is to make sure guests leave happy. The food is of high quality and is sold at a reasonable price.
