Irene Calabria, co-captain of MCCC's women's soccer team, got her first soccer ball when she was only three years old, and in that moment a love for the sport was born. However, she grew up in Madrid, Spain where young girls are not given the opportunity to play soccer. Full story

Women’s XC crosses country, participates in Nationals in NM

Four of the seven runners from the women's cross country team traveled to Hobbs, New Mexico to run in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Championship. Erika Manley, Sierra Downs, Jaqueline Goncalves, and Anajae Register competed in the five kilometer run on November 12. Full story

Women’s Soccer Team on a roll at end of season

Mercer's women's soccer team started the season off down seven games to one, but turned it around to finish the season with seven wins, twelves losses and one tie, enabling them to compete in the Region XIX semifinals. Mike DeAngelis, the assistant coach of the team for four years, said that the team had a lot of "tough luck losses" at the start of the season. Full story

Good times at Colonial Quoits Club in Hamilton

"Quit your bitchin' and start pitchin'." In May of 2000, this became the slogan for the Colonial Quoit Club, a quoiting league based in Hamilton, New Jersey. The Colonial Quoit Club, now one of the most established quoit leagues in New Jersey, has just wrapped up their 2011 season with Mike Cech taking the championship title. Full story

Locals Turn Out for Second Annual First Amendment 5K Race

The VOICE held its second annual First Amendment 5K Run-Walk on October 1. Despite the poor weather forecast, nearly 70 participants arrived to race for prizes and show support for both the award-winning paper and the first amendment. For Stephanie Nawracaj, the first place overall woman's finisher with a time of 22:41, the themes of freedom and charity were incentives for participating in the race. Full story

When should an athlete worry?

  After being hit in the head twice while playing soccer this past summer, nineteen year old Mercer student Megan Constance joined a large percentage of athletes who keep playing despite having concussions. According to the article, ‘Concussion Center for Children and Adolescents' found on the Saint Clare's Health System website, "41 percent of athletes that suffered a concussion reported back to sports to soon. Women's Cross Country Becomes a Team

This season, the women's cross country team became the first scoring team at MCCC in twenty years. Last season the women's cross country team only consisted of two runners, and in order to officially score in the race a team has to have at least five members. Full story

Mercer Men's Baseball's Season Overview

Last seasons record of 21-16 was enough to earn Mercer's baseball team a number two seeding in their region's post-season tournament, and after beating number one ranked Burlington (9-5) and number four ranked Sussex (6-5), their season was cut short by back to back losses to Lackawanna (3-0, 3-0) in the championship round. Men's Basketball: What to Watch for

The 2010-2011 Mercer men's basketball team finished last years season 16-17, after being eliminated from the post season by Del Tech Stanton in their Regional Tournament championship game.     Since then, the men's basketball team has transferred three sophomores onto four year universities. Women's Basketball Looks to Replace Three Graduates

Last season the Lady Vikings were eliminated in the first found of their regional post-season tounrament by Burlington County, resulting in a final record of 18-12. Since then, three of last years girls have moved onto four year schools during the summer. Full story

Women's Soccer Getting Ready for Big Season

Last year the Women's Soccer team finished with a final record of 7-8 and one draw after losing to Burlington in the District XIX post-season tournament's championship game, 1-2 (OT). During the summer Mercer's women's soccer program was able to pick up a couple key recruits including team captain and forward Nicole Tafrow (#20) of Nottingham and forward Chelsea Pitonyak (#5) of Steinert, to pair with key returner, mid-fielder Sam Biondi (#18) of Steinert who looks to bring some experience to the mostly freshmen squad. Mercer Baseball Player Makes It Big

James Pugliese Drafted by Chicago Cubs

  This past summer, James Pugliese became the first Mercer Viking to get drafted in over a decade when he was picked in the 18 round by the Chicago Cubs. Pugliese, a right handed pitcher, spent June 7 in front of a computer screen watching the draft, not knowing which round his name would appear or what teams would contact him. Full story

Trenton Thunder has an inconsistent start to the season

The Trenton Thunder, the double A affiliate of the New York Yankees, got their 2011 season off to a shaky start. In the first two weeks of the season the Trenton Thunder is 7-6. "We're hanging in there right now. We're not a very consistent team right now, but I think we will be," said manager Tony Franklin in a press conference at Waterfront Park.
