Overall, the collective agenda of the Occupy Wall Street movement has been unclear. When protesters were asked by the Voice what OWS's agenda is the answered varied.
According to Kelly Fragale, a member of the sustainability group in Occupy Wall Street, the OWS movement is built on the want for a democratic system that people can depend on for the service of their basic needs.
"Two weeks ago if you were to ask me this same question I would have said that the agenda was to create relationships and build a unified front with all who feel that it is time to stand up and acknowledge that people's lives are governed by a system that doesn't serve them and to consider alternatives to the injustices placed upon people and the earth and to participate in the general assembly. It seems it has been somewhat of a meet and greet of like minds and hearts coming together to engage in community with one another," said Fragale.
The number of protesters around the financial district usually range from a few hundred to over a thousand people. Due to such a huge number of protesters, the occupiers have created the General Assembly, which is the decision making group that seeks to include every occupier's voice. According to Fragale, the general assembly is the "bedrock of the movement."
"The General Assembly is a working model that facilitates a democratic process, in which all decisions are made by consensus of the people. This is where proposals and announcements are made," said Fragale.
They have recently passed a motion within the Occupy Movement to provide tents and sleeping bags for everyone. They also have collectively approved the purchase of bicycle powered generators for basic needs like recharging phones, laptops, and other electronic devices, further demonstrating their commitment to maintaining an established "camp." Despite the colder weather approaching as well as attempts by NYPD to remove protesters, the occupiers have been maintaining their camp out in Zuccotti Park for over three months and show no signs of leaving.
